Middle School Update and Other Fun

Ok, I know I type a lot when I do these blogs, and you'd think that that would be all I have to say. But it's not. I have lots of new stories and I'll try to catch you up on them with this post.

So, to continue the saga with the middle school. After leaving the English teacher's piles of papers that I didn't have to correct, just read, I began my time as the floater. Every day I would ask Mr. Todd, the guy in charge of placing us in the middle school, if there was anywhere I was needed. Last Thursday I was in the computer lab helping out some kids with their essays and I somehow ended up substitute teaching the History of Hip Hop class. Yeah. The next day I was substitute teaching a sixth grade class. Very random indeed. So today my job was to round up the kids to go to the library that is open on Wednesdays. I do my thing, going around to the classes, when I get to the science room. Only there is no science taking place, my friends. Oh no, it is a drama class! They were doing vocal warm ups and playing theatre games. I found my new middle school home. I'm real excited to be doing drama again and seeing the excitment in some of the student's faces. I didn't mind being a floater, but it is nice to know where I am going every afternoon.

On Sunday I went to church. Our unit leader, my team leader's boss, came down to San Diego last weekend. She actually lives here part time and so her family is all down here and she knows everyone and everything about SD. So she invited us to her church. Katie, Kevin and I went with her and my, oh my, what a huge church. There are not one, but two big sanctuaries and they have to have 6 different services because their whole congregation is about 4,000. It was a great service that had modern worship music and a very laid-back atmosphere. Perhaps a little too laid back in the fact that one of the pastors was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. But it was a great service and I would definatly go back again.

Tonight was quite a different church experience. Kevin and I went to the Calvary Baptist Church. That is the church that is right across the street from us and who owns the school property. All I can say is that every movie you have ever seen about an African-American Baptist church is all true. It was so energetic and vocal with the "amen!"s and the "hallelujah!"s and the pastor was a very large man who loves the "lo-rd". He made us stand up during the announcements and introduce ourselves and then the entire church proceeded to come and either shake our hand or hug us. It was quite the experience and I really want to see what it is like at the Sunday services.

So, those were a few more stories that are now out there in the universe. Only two and a half more weeks until I'm forced back to Sacramento. Maybe I'll just refuse to leave.
