I know, it wasn't a suprise to me either since the NCCC people have told us to expect to be down there for the rest of our time with Americorps. But now I know where I will be for the first part of my time there! I'll be in a town called Slidell, Louisiana. It is right across Lake Pontchatrain (sp) from New Orleans and only a 30 drive from the Big Easy. We will be working with a group called Operation Blessing and doing probably some construction type stuff and maybe working in a health clinic. We don't know yet exactly what we will be doing. In Slidell will also be three other teams from Sacramento, so I'll have lots of friends down there! If anybody knows anything about this city or the area, let me know, because I am totally clueless about the whole south part of the states. We will be driving there, so I'll get to see Arizona, New Mexico and Texas as we go. Pretty excited about that!
Friday night some of us went downtown again. I was so proud of myself that I resisted the urge to buy stuff. We went to Borders and I resisted. We went to Urban Outfitters and I resisted. But once we got to Ghiradelli's, my resistance faded. I had the most delicious hot fudge sundae on earth. It was made with Ghiradelli's chocolate melted on top of vanilla ice cream and a chocolate chip cookie on the bottom. Soooo good!
Yesterday I did an independent service project with a group called I Love a Clean San Diego. For four hours I picked up garbage. Christine, one of my teammates, got interviewed by a local news station for volunteering at the event. Afterward we went to the pastor of the church where our school is housed and his wife's (the school principal) house for a BBQ. We had some amazazing ribs and incredible salads. There house was huge a beautiful too. It was nice to actually be in someone's home for even a couple of hours. Then last night I was really tired, so I did some cleaning up of my stuff and went to bed early.
This morning I went to the church I went to two weekends ago. I refer to it as the "rock and roll" church. The church describes itself as "seeker friendly," which means that during the Sunday worship services, they try to make it so that someone who has never been to church or doesn't know what Christianity is will be able to understand and get something from it. It plays rock music by U2 and Moby and shows clips from movies such as The Shawshank Redemption and The History of the World (I bring you 15 "crash"...10, 10 commandments!). Their worship band is awesome and the pastors wear jeans and t-shirts. It's also a super-church, meaning that they have so many people coming that they have two seperate sanctuaries and 6 different services. I enjoy this church, but I don't think I could belong to it in the long run. Even though they have tons of small groups, I think I'd feel like too much of a number going there. It's fun to visit, tho.
It's Sunday afternoon, and you know what that means...NAP TIME! Have a good Sunday/Monday everyone!
Love and Miss
