I did not think that as a VISTA that the crap economy would hit me. I am paid through the federal government and have committed one year to AmeriCorps. But it came around to me when I got back from Philadelphia this past week (more on Philly next post).
All non-profit organizations are beginning to cut back due to the projected loss of funds from donors. Some are cutting the budget up to 30%. The senior management cut 10%, which doesn't seem as dramatic, but the cuts included layoffs. The national office saw a lot of fantastic workers let go, including a person in my department. It hurt. I had done quite a bit of training with this person and I regarded her as a good work friend. All of this happened in the office when I was away in Philly for a week, so I came in and was briefed by my supervisor. After my wonderful week of training in Philly, this was the worst way to come back.
I don't even know what to say about this. My position is not in danger because I am not paid by Jumpstart. There was a change in attitude and morale in the office from what I could tell. I am going to miss the people who are gone, but more importantly, the organization is going to miss them and their brilliant work.
Stupid economy...
