Welcome to my life

Hi my internet friends! In two months I will relocate to Sacramento, CA to join Americorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps). From January to October 2007 I will travel the western states doing service projects for non-profit organizations. I know that I am going to have a bajillion experiences, good, bad and otherwise, and that I'll want to share them with all my friends and family. So hello 21st century! What did people do before the internet and web logs? I'll do my best to keep this updated and add all kinds of fun pictures so you can know what I'm up to.

I guess this whole thing really began towards the end of my college career. I think I read something about Americorps in the school newspaper and I thought it was a great idea. Like the Peacecorps, but national. I didn't think much else about it because I was graduating and ready to listen to all the offers that the public relations world was ready to give me. I was all set to live the life of news releases, event planning, speech writing and the sort.

Skip to two months, many interviews, tons of resumes later, and I am still not employed. The PR world was just not ready for Jenna, yet. Now I was thinking what other options were out there for a gal like me. I thought about how cool it would be to join Peacecorps, but I don't have any specialized skills that they could use. Then I remembered Americorps. I send in the application and wait. I then receive a letter telling me that the funding for the program I applied to (NCCC) was on the national budget chopping block and unless they could secure the funds, they would have to cancel the program.

Well crap. Now what am I going to do? I do the phone interview anyway and go on with my life, which included getting a job as a camp counselor for the summer. Then the week before I leave for camp, and the same day that I have an ingrown toenail removed (tmi, I know) I get a packet in the mail telling me that I was accepted into Americorps*NCCC! Whoop whoop! It looked like they would get the funding after all! I was assigned to the western region campus in Sacramento starting in Jan. 2007.

Right now, you wouldn't believe how excited and anxious I am to get going. Right now, I am 80% excited and 20% nervous about it all, and I think the numbers will fluctuate as the time grows nearer. Every time I get something in the mail from them I do a little dance inside my head. I should be getting my flight information in the next couple of weeks. I feel like January 9th is ages and ages away, but time has been flying by pretty swiftly so far.

I don't know when I'll write again. I mean, how much can I write when I haven't even started? I hope you enjoy reading this thingamabob. Take care!
